It’s never enough, to simply, be elected, or hold, some position of leadership! Rather, a true leader, assumes a high degree of personal responsibility, and perceives things, as they should be, without limiting the possibilities! After, over 4 decades, of personal involvement, in nearly every area of leadership, from identifying and qualifying candidates, training them properly, evaluating the best individuals (best – suited, to lead), consulting to thousands of actual and potential leaders, and serving, as a leader, I have come to believe, strongly, one of the key ingredients and considerations, must be, how someone determines, the best PATH, to pursue, and proceed, with. With that in mind, this article will attempt to, briefly, consider, examine, review, and discuss, using the mnemonic approach, what this means and represents, and why it matters.
1. Priorities; pursuits; planning; process; phases: How can anyone, lead, in a meaningful, relevant way, unless/ until, it is based on true priorities? A quality leader must pursue the best process, to achieve, the desired objectives! To do so, requires, quality planning, based on professionally designed, leadership training, and the patience, and discipline to proceed, in phases, etc, rather than, becoming overwhelmed! Perhaps, one of the lessons, often ignored, should be to understand this. How do you eat the elephant? One bite, at a time!
2. Attitude; aptitude; attention; action plan; articulate: Real leaders must possess, consistently, a positive, can – do, attitude, focused on ways to get things done, rather than why they can’t be achieved! A true training program, trains potential individuals, with the most desirable, needed, aptitude, and skill – set! When these two things, are combined, and one, proceeds, with paying keen attention, and patience/ discipline, etc, he proceeds to use strategic planning, to conceive of, create, develop, and implement, a meaningful, relevant, sustainable, action plan! How one articulates his vision, determines, whether he inspires and motivates, his constituents, for the common/ greater good!
3. Trust/ trustworthy; timely, time – tested: When someone, is consistently, trustworthy, demonstrating, absolute integrity, others become, far more willing to trust him, and listen, to his ideas, etc! Leading must be based on taking, well – considered, timely action, considering options and alternatives, and gaining experience, expertise, and hopefully, judgment, and wisdom, from time – tested approaches, and ideas!
4. Healing; head/ heart; humane; hear: Hear what others indicate, and listen effectively, in order to proceed, with genuine empathy! A real leader must seek to enhance healing, rather than causing, more division, and polarization! One must be ready, and capable of balancing his emotional and logical components, in a head/ heart balance! Judge, whether one is fit – to – lead, based on whether, their mind – set, and actions, are truly, humane!
If you hope to be a quality leader, learn the fundamentals, and determine the best – possible, PATH of action, to pursue! Are you up to the task?
