Cheap Ways To Prep For That Job Interview
After twenty cover letters, resume edits, and hours of scouring job boards, you finally nailed an interview. However, you don’t have a huge budget to get ready for it!
There are many reasons to be excited, especially in this economic age. All of your hard work is finally starting to pay off. You walk over to your closet, and begin to pick out the perfect outfit only to discover that you have no idea what to wear and you don’t have the cash to buy new clothes.
What’s a girl to do?
Luckily for you, there are tons of women that frequently deal with the issue of having to prepare for an interview on a budget. So, I’d like to help with easing the level of fashionable stress, and provide you with 3 tips on how to dress:
Tip#1 Be Neat, Clean, & Well Groomed
OK, so this step should be a no brainer, but you would be surprised how many people overlook the importance of grooming. Your first impression can immediately provide your future employer with an indirect snapshot of your personality. Meaning, if you are unkempt, how will you manage to keep up with the requirements and professional standards of the job if you are unable to take care of yourself. Before, stepping into an interview, please make sure to do the following:
- Have cleaned manicured nails: If you are on a budget and unable see a manicurist, Sally Hansen makes an awesome Manicure Set. This Manicure Set retails for $11.00, and can be less costly than spending $20.00+tip at a salon. If you are not good at giving yourself a manicure, check your area for daily deals, Groupon always has nail care specials.
- Tone down your makeup: I prefer the quick make-up look which includes foundation, blush, mascara and lip gloss. Check out ELF Cosmetics, complete make-up palettes range from $3.00-$15.00.
- Remove facial piercing
- Keep your accessories simple: Try this combo: stud earrings, a pearl necklace, and a bracelet watch. This is a great combination and can be paired with just about any interview outfit. If you are on a budget, Charming Charlie specializes in providing accessories at super cheap prices.
- Go easy on the perfume and hairspray. (If you smell like a walking version of a Macy’s fragrance department, chances are the interviewee will have an allergy attack). I prefer body splash because its lighter in terms of scent, and it’s less overpowering than perfume.)
Tip #2 Dress in Accordance for the Position
Not only is it important to dress appropriately for the interview, but dress in accordance with the respective position of which you are applying. For example, if you are interviewing for a corporate position, it would be fitting to wear a conservative business suit. If you decide to wear a skirt and a blazer, please NO MINI SKIRTS! A recommended skirt length should be at knee level.
Here are a few “fashion no-no’s” to be cognizant of:
- No open toe shoes, Payless Shoes is a great option when shopping for an inexpensive black pump.
- Do not wear skirts without nylons
- Do not wear sheer blouses
- Avoid tight clothing
- Avoid bringing too many bags (leave the disorganized/junkie handbag in the car, you’ll thank me later)
Tip # 3 Bring Your Resume and Interviewing Accessories
So you sit down for the interview, and guess what the first question the interviewee will ask, “Did you bring a copy of your resume?” Please bring a copy of your resume, preferably printed on professional paper. Also, be sure to place your interview materials within a neat portfolio or small briefcase. You’ll want to show your future employer that you are the complete package.
Checkout Target for portfolios or briefcases, they offer a wonderful selection.
And remember, positive thoughts bring about positive results!
